Grete Waitz and Ed Eyestone win Bay to Breakers, which sets a Guinness World record for being the world's largest footrace, with 78,769 registered runners.  Throw in bandits and the number is estimated to be 110,000 runners!

BEST SAN FRANCISCO RUNNING CLUBS

Running clubs abound in San Francisco.  Some are competitive on the PA/USATF
circuit, others run for charity, others train for endurance events, while others are
just recreational, social clubs. Here's a list of faves that The Turkey recommends.

Presidio RX San Francisco Casual group - FREE.  Meet Mon & Weds after work for 5 mile runs in the Presidio.
Kstars San Francisco Casual group - FREE.  Meets Saturday mornings in Golden Gate Park  for runs between 6-20+ mile runs.  Also has Thursday night track workouts at Kezar Stadium.
DSE San Francisco Oldest run club in SF.   Holds weekly, no frills races in different locations every Sunday.
Hash House Harriers San Francisco Um, very casual group; the drinking club with a running problem.  SF chapter of the international running club.
New Balance Excelsior San Francisco Competitive run club.   Sponsors the annual Zippy 5K run.
West Valley Track Club San Francisco Competitive run club.   Sponsors the annual Christmas Relay.
Impalas San Francisco Competitive women's run club.
The Olympic Club San Francisco Members Only. This is the secret underground world of running & athletic clubs, requiring "exceptional athletic skill" and committee recommendation. Slackers need not apply.

Oakland Competitive run club.
Tamalpa Runners Marin Competitive and casual.  One of the oldest clubs in the Bay Area, Tamalpans run on the trails of the Marin Headlands and North Bay.
Palo Alto Run Club Palo Alto Casual group.  Meets Monday and Wednesdays after work for various runs around Palo Alto, Stanford and Menlo Park. Also does Saturday long runs at Sawyer Camp San Mateo.
